Yiwu Brown Sugar
According to records of Yiwu county annals, the history of Yiwu sugarcane planting and sugaring can date back to more than 400 years ago. During the Qing shunzhi period, villager of Yanli village( Fotang Town) Jia Weicheng first introduced in the way of sugarcane planting and sugaring from Wenzhou, Zhejiang province. Yanli village is the birthplace of Yiwu sweet cause. In the Qing dynasty Qianlong period, Yiwu people started doing business in terms of exchanging brown sugar made gingers with chicken feathers by going everywhere with a rattle shaking in hand.
At the beginning of last century, sugarcane planting area was mainly in Fotang and Yiting(towns in Yiwu). It was from the start of 1930s that the planting area began to expand throughout the county. The most prosperous period of sugarcane planting was in the 35th year of the Republic of China (1946) covering an area of over 60,000 acres, ranking first in the province and became a provincial key sugaring area. Each year around the winter solstice, a large number of sugarcanes grew mature. At first glance, it looked like a sugarcane world as well as a green curtain. Sugarcanes were everywhere, air in each village and town was filled with strong sweet smell of sugar.
In recent days, almost each family have these sweet food, which taste pretty good. At this moment, childhood memory of exchanging chicken feather with sugar will come up in mind.
