Yiwu is in central Zhejiang Province, east of Jinhua and Quzhou Basin with a municipal area of 1105 square km. It faces Guangdong and Fujian in the south and links to the hinterland of the Yangtze River in the west. It’s near to China’s largest city Shanghai in the east, facing the Pacific golden path. Yiwu is the world’s largest distribution center of small commodities and was identified as the world’s largest market by the United Nations, the World Bank and other international authoritative institutions. Yiwu International Trade City was awarded the honor of China’s first AAAA-level shopping tourist place by the National Tourism Administration. “Commodity Ocean, Shoppers’ Paradise” has become the synonym of prosperous, civilized Yiwu city.
Since the reform and opening up, Yiwu Zhejiang stick to and deepen the “encourage business to build city” development strategy, regard cultivating, developing and enhancing market as the core and vigorously promote the industrialization, internationalization and integration of urban and rural areas and finally created its own unique path of development. Yiwu Zhejiang now is the China Commodity Trade Center, the turnover of China Commodity City (commodity professional market) ranks the first in the past ten consecutive years.
On January 24, Yiwu Zhejiang Municipal Bureau of Statistics released the city’s economic performance in 2010. Data show that last year the city economy as a whole was in a stable and healthy situation, industrial production was in rapid growth, investment maintain steady growth, foreign trade was in good situation, the market development was in continuous prosperity, finance and financial operations were stable, energy consumption reduction work achieved preliminary effects. According to preliminary estimates, the Yiwu Zhejiang’s GDP reached 61.4 billion yuan in 2010, increased by 11.5%. The growth rate is 2.5 percentage points higher than the previous year.
In 2010, the total turnover of Yiwu Market Places reached 62.116 billion yuan, increased by 11.7% compared with last year, of which the turnover of China Commodity City was 45.6065 billion yuan, increased by 10.8%. The market turnover of Yiwu Zhejiang Farmer City reached 2.658 billion yuan, increased by 55.4%. The turnover of Yiwu Zhejiang Non-staple Food Market was 4.712 billion yuan, increased by 12.7%.
